Classic Shaker

A Shaker door has a timeless appeal. It consists of a four-piece frame and a recessed flat panel. Dating back to the 18th century Shaker movement in England and later the USA, their furniture was designed to be unembellished, functional and durable, based on the Christian values of cleanliness, honesty and frugality.

Originally, a Shaker door would have been hung on traditional butt hinges within a wooden frame (Shaker in-frame, butt hinge). Today, the hinges can be concealed behind doors whilst still retaining a frame (Shaker concealed hinge). Alternatively, the surrounding frame can be dispensed with so that the door covers the carcass edges (Shaker lay-on).
